On December 21, top officials of the Ontario New Democratic Party cancelled the Ontario NDP convention set for January 17-19, 2025 in Toronto. They cited as reasons for this controversial move the prospect of imminent federal and Ontario elections. The NDP Socialist Caucus questions this rationale. We contend that a party convention could best serve to organize, energize and gain vital democratic policy direction from the membership at this critical time.
Moreover, it makes one wonder whether the cancellation is due to the likelihood that an ONDP convention would take a strong stand against the Zionist genocide in Palestine, demand that censured MPP Sarah Jama be immediately reinstated to membership in the NDP caucus at Queen’s Park, and insist that Jama be the official NDP candidate in Hamilton Centre.
