The very survival of civilization depends on a rapid conversion to 100% Renewable, Green Energy. That means No New Pipelines. The big drop in the price of oil presents a golden opportunity to oppose pipeline construction, to re-tool, and to implement green energy conversion by investment in wind, hydro, wave energy, solar, geothermal and biomass alternatives.
The NDP should endorse the principles of the Leap Manifesto. These include: respecting indigenous people’s rights, a green energy shift to a 100% clean economy by 2050, creating collectively controlled new clean energy systems, replacing “austerity” with higher taxes on corporations and wealthy people, ending fossil fuel subsidies and cutting military spending, and investing in retraining, social housing, childcare, and localized, ecologically-based agriculture.
Seeking the broadest possible public discussion, we need to advocate a gigantic energy shift. At the same time, indigenous peoples’ rights and their agreement to development is a non-negotiable prerequisite. Workers displaced by the move away from carbon-based systems should be re-trained and offered the first jobs in the new green energy economy.
